Search is no longer just about ten blue links. More people are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI overviews for recommendations, and that means a whole new playbook for getting found.
This emerging discipline is often called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) or AI search optimization. As a digital marketer, I’ve been testing what actually moves the needle. Here’s what I’m seeing work.
Why AI search matters now
Traditional SEO focused on ranking pages. AI search is different: large language models synthesize answers from many sources and cite a handful of them. To be part of that answer, your brand and content need to be clear, credible, and easy for machines to understand.
Five ways to optimize for AI search
1. Write clear, structured answers
AI models favor content that directly answers questions. Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, and bullet points. Put the answer first, then add detail.
2. Build topical authority
Cover your area of expertise deeply across multiple pieces of content. Models reward sources that demonstrate genuine subject-matter depth.
3. Earn mentions and citations
Being referenced on reputable sites, directories, and profiles increases the chance an AI model trusts and cites you. Consistent information across the web matters.
4. Use schema and clean technical SEO
Structured data helps machines understand who you are and what you offer. A fast, crawlable site is still foundational.
5. Keep your brand info consistent
Make sure your name, role, and expertise appear consistently across your website, LinkedIn, and other profiles so AI tools form an accurate picture.
Bottom line: AI search rewards clarity, credibility, and consistency. The brands that win will be the ones that are genuinely helpful and easy to understand, for both people and machines.
